Brian Wayda, MPH

Country Analyst

Brian joined CSHOR in June 2008. His research interests include infectious disease modeling and cost-effectiveness analysis. At CSHOR, he is currently developing a country-level forecasting model for artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT) demand. Before joining CSHOR, Brian worked with National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Disease (Kolkata, India) on a behavioral survey of sex workers and a forecast of HIV incidence. He has also conducted research at SEWA Rural Hospital (Gujarat, India) and Prince of Wales Hospital (Hong Kong). Brian earned his bachelor’s degree in Physics and Economics and master’s degree from Yale University.

Jennifer Usas, MS

Research Associate

Jennifer Usas is a Research Associate with CSHOR and focuses on building computer models of integrated TB/HIV care and treatment. She also supports team members in all areas of CSHOR’s program work. Before joining CSHOR, she worked in HIV/AIDS program development and implementation both in the United States and East Africa. Jennifer received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and a Master’s of Science in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Aaron Tjoa

Policy Analyst

Aaron Tjoa is a Policy Analyst with CSHOR. Since joining CSHOR, Aaron’s work has focused on analyzing health system design; assessing the resource requirements and patient attrition within pediatric testing networks; modeling a countrywide human resource pipeline and quantifying the impact of different ministry policies; and analyzing the infrastructure and faculty resource requirements of health professional schools. Prior to joining CSHOR, he worked with CHAI for a year in Lesotho with a primary focus on laboratory and rural projects. Aaron attended Harvard College where he received a degree in economics and he has an interest in promoting human rights and economic development.

Maaya Sundaram, MPA

Country Analyst - Swaziland

Maaya Sundaram joined CSHOR in March 2008. She has focused primarily on early infant diagnosis of HIV and has provided support in Swaziland, Mozambique, and Lesotho. She is also interested in retention and quality of care for children and adults as well as health systems issues focusing on supply chain. Maaya has work experience in the public sector developing information technology solutions for supply chain issues. She received a bachelor’s degree in Business with concentrations in Computer Information Systems and Business Process Management from Indiana University and a Master in Public Administration with a concentration in International Development from Syracuse University Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs in June 2007.

Michelle Nowakowski, MPH

Research Associate

Michelle joined CSHOR in May 2008. Her interests include cost-effectiveness analysis and resource optimization in resource limited settings. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 2004, earning her bachelor’s degree in African Studies and Psychology. Her undergraduate studies included work as a research assistant at Oxford University in England and a semester at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. In 2008, Michelle received her master’s degree at Boston University’s School of Public Health, focusing primarily on international health policy and management.

Elizabeth McCarthy, MPH

Policy Director

Elizabeth McCarthy directs CSHOR projects focused on the policy application of operations research models to public health. Elizabeth also contributes to the overall strategy and direction of CSHOR. She has over 10 years of experience in international public health. Before joining CHAI in 2005, she spent three years with the Peace Corps in Madagascar as a volunteer, trainer, and program specialist, and over two years working for the Centers for Disease Control’s Global AIDS Program. Elizabeth attended Tufts University where she received a degree in international relations and economics, and the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she received an MPH with an emphasis on international health and quantitative methods.

Gaurav Kapoor

Country Analyst

Gaurav Kapoor joined CSHOR in May 2008 as a Country Analyst. Prior to joining CSHOR, he worked with the CHAI procurement access team and was responsible for handling the logistics, challenges in diagnostics and therapeutic supplies for the CHAI consortium countries. Gaurav has worked in information technology consulting, logistics, and running an exports start up venture. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi with a specialization in engineering in textile technology.
